Probably Awkward has no official policy on covering politics, but as well-mannered people we typically choose to remain silent on the government (corrupt), religion (crutch for the weak), and the war (a profit center for government contractors who have made their fortunes through cronyism, corruption, and the wholesale massacre of our young and poor).
That said, today brings another story of a Republican politico, Larry Craig, a Senator who signed the Defense of Marriage Act, propositioning a stranger for sex in a public rest room. He now joins the proud ranks of Bob Allen(R), Florida State Representative, former Congressman Mark Foley(R), and Conservative Republican ally, megachurch leader Tim Haggard as victims of the worst kind of outings. They were outed not just as "perverts," not just as criminals, but also as hypocrites. Each supported discrimination against gays or laws against "indecency." Left without the support of their former peers and the earned enmity of their new brethren, these men have earned a place in the Ninth Circle of Hell , as traitors and oathbreakers. If they'd just owned up to their Lust, they would have ended up in the relatively cushy Second Circle instead.
That is, if Hell existed. But we're polite people, and we don't talk about such things.
[HT adds: Our friend and Midnight Madness teammate MG, over at Delusions of Grandeur, is considerably less polite and markedly more political than we are on this, and other matters. Check him out.]
